History of 1908 Hessian Road, Reading, PA 19602

1908 Hessian Road was built in 1929 on land that had been the site of the Hessian Prisoner of War Camp in the Revolutionary War, established after the Battle of Trenton. This timepiece treasure was previously owned by Congressman Gus Yatron. The Congressional Law Library still remains in the First Floor Library with Original Oak Pegged Hardwood Floors and Full Leaded Glass Windows.


Features of the Home

The Hessian Road home is an example of European Arts and Craft design. It has American pegged oak floors through out the first floor which were refinished in 2013. The landing inside the front door is Pennsylvania slate. All interior and exterior doors as well as all the trim and fireplace surround as well as built in bookshelves in the library are imported European oak. The library , which is just off the entry landing, has massive European Oak pocket doors and stained glass and leaded glass windows.

All the railings from the landing, staircase and gates separating the living room from the formal dining room, are hand hammered bronze, which alone were estimated to have  value of $160,000.00.

There are water radiators under every window in the house, in 2012 the furnace was converted from oil to natural gas, providing the home with more consistent and much more affordable heat.

The first floor has 12 foot ceilings through out. There is a marble fireplace in the living room with an oak surround which extends to the ceiling.

Their is a very convenient powder room on the first floor landing.

The spacious kitchen has new Samsung gas stove, Samsung French door refrigerator and a new Maytag dishwasher.

On the second floor are four large bedrooms, the smallest of which is 14' x 17'. The small bedroom has a half bath en suite. The two middle bedrooms share a jack and jill bath which has a Jacuzzi type of tub. One of these two bedrooms has both the clothes closet as well as a cedar lined closet. The master bedroom is a very large bedroom with a half round wall on one end, there is a dressing room with a walk in closet as well as a second closet. The original jewelry safe is built into the wall in the dressing room, which is still working and the combination will be provided to the next owner. Off the dressing room is a bathroom with shower that has side and head fixtures. On either side of the shower are linen closets.

The third floor is the attic which is approximately 28'x 48 ' is additional space that can be used for storage or could be renovated into additional living space.

Also, a one car garage is attached off the kitchen on the first floor.

In the basement there is a massive living room with a stone wood burning fireplace with insert, as well as the water radiators and a 12000 BTU gas stove. Off the living area is a fully equipped kitchen space, Where the oil tanks previously sat is the laundry area with washer and dryer. A half bath in the basement was remodeled in 2012 into a full spa bath with slate walls and floors, a deep soaker tub and separate stand alone shower. the original 10' x 35 ' wine seller was converted into a bedroom, and the old 10' x 25' coal storage room was converted into additional sleeping space with a closet.

Finally an outdoor 16' x 20' storage building was placed on the parking area of the house for lawn equipment and additional storage.
